20th January 2008
Hello everyone, I hope you had a fantastic new year!
It's 2008 and here's a quick update on what some of the Blind Melon Tribute Artists have been getting up to, so far this year...
Jena Kraus:
Jena has recently added two beautiful acoustic tracks, blending her amazing voice and raw guitar - much in the same spirit as her version of Tickled Pink on Twenty Stories Below. Check out Heaven & I'm Not Afraid on Jena's Myspace Page now! You won't be disappointed! We sure do hope she plans to release an e.p or album in the near future! Fingers crossed, aye?
The Velmas : As always the Velmas have been keeping themselves busy and will be recording a new music video soon.
On their myspace blog they posted "so, the live-action has been filmed for the Tell Her I Love Her video. this weekend, we're aiming to finish up the "storyline" footage. we're meeting up at the bayou cafe downtown New York around 9:30 or so. if you want to be an extra of some sort, that'd be your last chance. hope to see some of you there!"
Also check out this live performance of Sun, played at Northern Lights late last year HERE!
Audience Earth (formerly known as Flames of Troy) : Apart from the recent band name change, Audience Earth have been working away at a new E.P named "Backgrounds".
You can check out cool new music on their myspace page, that could well feature on the E.P
Yakmusic highly recommends you check out their rocking instrumental 'The Journey' - which certainly does take you on one!
David Aaron: David has been keeping him very busy creatively, and recently added a new song on his myspace page called Rock Hood. Check it Out!
It's a very catchy gem and really shows David's broad musical talents.
About Rock Hood, he said "Im tweaking the mix and re-doing vocals so im going to keep uploading it until its finally done. I'm working on a video for the song as well. Its in process. Yall let me know what u think of the song. be good. rock hood!"
MoeDeLL: MoeDeLL has been playing a heap of shows around Minnesota and last heard, has been finishing off his album, hopefully for release this year, we'll keep you posted! MoeDeLL also has another new project called Nelson Flavor. Check out their groove/funk collections HERE!
Jamie Shields: YakMusic had a quick catch up with Jamie and this is what she told us:
1) What have been some of Jamie Shields highlights of 2007?
My highlights of the year vary from everything from my graduation from college (finally!) writing new music (I have a new song called "Lover's Boots"), and of course, the biggest highlight (something I've been wanting to do for about 14 or 15 years), MEETING BLIND MELON AND SEEING THEM LIVE! Of course, it's not the same without Shannon but I respect every member of that band. They have all influenced me greatly with their music and meeting them was an incredible experience that I will cherish always. 2) What are some of Jamie Shields' aspirations for 2008?
I recently played an excellent show on January 2nd in NYC The line-up was fantastic. St. Louis native prodigy, Casey Reid performed, as well as NYC's Peculiar Gentlement, who's music ranges all over the charts and gets the body and mind pumping. As for personal aspirations with my music, I plan on writing more songs and playing the occasional gig :)
Stay Tuned for Another Update Soon!!!

NICO HOON JOINS BLIND MELON ON STAGE FOR 7th SHOW IN CHICAGO 16th October 2007
Blind Melon fans lucky enough to get along to the Double Door in Chicago for Blind Melon's 7th tour concert on the night of October 16th will have a concert experience they will never forget.
After the band blasted out a few old tunes such as Galaxie, Toes Across the Floor & Soup and a few new tunes such as For My Friends & Tumblin' Down, singer Travis Warren welcomed Nico Hoon on stage to the huge delight of the Chicago audience.
Nico, now 12 years old and looking much like her father, sang Change with the band, and was invited back on stage at the end of the gig to help Travis sing No Rain.
After the concert, Mario Pereira (in pics below), the owner of Shannon Hoon's old 63' Galaxie which featured on the cover of Twenty Stories Below, meet up with Blind Melon, Nico, Lisa and Nel Hoon and had everyone sign under the hood of the Galaxie. Brad added the words "Blind Melon. Shannon Lives!"
It was fantastic for all fans to see the love first hand on stage. Blind Melon continue to celebrate the Shannon Hannon legacy everytime they play on stage, and tonight was certainly no exception...

BLIND MELON ARE BACK! PICS & INFO OF THEIR FIRST GIG! 8th October 2007
The Blind Melon Forum will soon be flooded with numerous lucky Blind Melon fans posting their first experiences of the new Blind Melon lineup playing their first gig in 12 years tonight.
Because of the time difference, I was lucky enough to be one of the first to see the pics uploaded and a huge review posted by a Blind Melon Forum member Keith who was one of many lucky concert goers who went along to see Blind Melon play in Rhode Island @ Decibel at Club Hell.
As Keith explains in his lengthy review, "They kicked right into Galaxie without a word. It was if 12 years of pent of aggression were stored up in all of them and they just let it all out. Let me say this right now - Travis is fucking legit. He nailed everything the whole night and it started right off the bat with Galaxie. I have pics and video to prove all this but you can take my word for it!"
Blind Melon played 12 old tracks and 6 new songs in their setlist - encoring with Mouthful of Cavaties, Pusher and the ripped away and original versions of No Rain.
Thanks again to Keith for the fantastic work - especially in the early hours of the morning!

According to Blind Melon's myspace page, the dates & venues are as follows:

New Blind Melon Song, Kurt's getting his band together & The Holy Crabs have new songs on MySpace! 15th August 2007
Wow! There's been alot going on in the Blind Melon circles!
First of all, those Melon boys have been working hard towards releasing the new highly anticipated Blind Melon album late this year - their first release (of new tracks) since Blind Melon's 1996 b-sides collection Nico.
If you head over to Blind Melon's myspace page, you can hear brand new tracks including the recently added track named Wishing Well
It's gem of a track, with some clever guitar licks throughout, and Travis' vocals hitting some fantastic notes!
Blind Melon have also posted their video Harmful Belly on YouTube! Click on the image Below!
Blind Melon is certainly in good shape, and the world is their oyster! Hold tight!
In other news, Kurt Katland (who with Rochester Band Defuze) covered PULL on Twenty Stories Below, has just sent YakMusic an update on his mission to form a new band!
Kurt says "As well playing a solo acoustic show in downtown San Diego on August 27th I am hard at work. We have yet to land a name but Chris McCurdy (drums) and I have now added Pat Bagby (guitar) and Davey "Fish" Cadava (bass) and have already co written a few tunes as a whole collective band, along with the tunes Chris and I have already been working on.
There is a definite, unique, signature style being born out of our collected jams in way that has a melodic hard rock meeting the blues in a grungy kinda way-but thats putting music into a real cracker box. Musically: big show onslaught with the same style rough edges that make you love your favorite dive bar.
The idea is to have it up and running in early November.. but we will see, I hate to speculate on how much time anything takes, there is much to get done in the meantime. Stay posted on my site myspace.com/kurtvatland"
The Holy Crabs, who covered Letters From a Porcupine on the Blind Melon Tribute Album, have also been busy working on getting together a brand new album, with 3 of their new original songs posted on their Myspace Page!
The new Holy Crabs songs are: Ten Years Ago, I'm the One, and Train.
All songs are very catchy and very souful! Check them out now!

"Selling Tshirts with the name of Twenty Stories Below on it can only be beneficial for the Tribute album - it's simply another way we want to get the news of the album out on the streets - it almost works the same as what a Street Team would really" said Mark of YakMusic, "We will have all sorts of Mens & Womens Tshirts mainly in black, white and red plus various things like Buttons, Mouse Pads & Babies Bibs!"
The Store plans to be online in a week.
TRAVIS WARREN SOLO SHOW BRINGS TEARS OF JOY 8th April 2007
New Melon Vocalist Travis T Warren played a solo acoustic show in LA a few days ago. Rogers Stevens joined Travis on stage and played The Pusher, Sleepyhouse and some of the new songs (Hypnotize, For My Friends and To Spain I Stay). Rogers wrote the following on the blindmelonforum.com: "The show was fun. Travis got up and played a few songs before I went up and it was the first time I had a chance to see him perform in front of an audience...it was eye-opening and awesome because he has no fear of being up there. You get the sense that he owns the stage and everyone else is just borrowing it. Anyway, his vocals were spot on. People in the audience were crying when we played "sleepyhouse", so either it was really good or totally horrible. I didn't have a chance to ask them. Also, the crowd was singing the 'goddamms" on 'the pusher' at top volume.
Apologies for being cagey about sending out a show recording. We really want these songs to be presented in the studio versions before any live stuff gets out there. Once the album is released, we're totally cool with taping and all that stuff."
Travis will be playing 2 more acoustic shows on April 17th in San Luis Obispo and another one in LA in May.
